What are compression garments and why do I need them?Compression garments are elasticated socks, sleeves or under garments that help to reduce swelling and/or support your veins. Garments work with your muscles to help move the fluid away from your area of swelling.
When should I wear my compression garment? It is recommended that you put your garment on as soon as possible after getting up from bed. It is best to wear your compression during your waking hours so that your muscles can work with the garment to soften and move your lymph fluid from the swollen area.
Should I wear my compression garment to bed?You can remove your compression garment before going to bed. However, your therapist may advise you to wear your garment to bed, or to wear a different type of garment when in bed. This decision is based on the assessment by your lymphoedema therapist and may change over time.
How do I get my garments on and off?We offer a selection of gadgets (donning aids) that you can try in clinic. These may help you to get your garments on and off more easily. We can also teach your friends and family or carers to assist you. There are no NHS services available to support with getting your garments on or off.
When do I moisturise my skin if I wear compression garments? It is important to continue to wash, dry and moisturise your skin daily. Apply your moisturising cream after you remove your garment, or 15 to 20 minutes before putting your garment on, so it can soak into your skin. This will keep your skin healthy, and your compression garment will last longer as moisturiser can damage the material.
How do I take care of my compression garments?Your compression garment will have washing instructions included in its packaging. Please follow the manufacturer’s guidance for washing and drying your compression garment. Ideally, wash your garments in a washing machine. It is important to wear a clean garment each day to reduce the risk of skin infections. To maintain the lifespan of your garments, make sure your nails are trimmed to avoid damaging the fabric.
How many compression garments do I get?You will be normally be issued with two garments for each area of swelling, so that you have one to wear and one to wash. More garments may be provided depending on your needs. Each garment should last six months if worn daily.
How do I get replacement garments? If your garments are damaged and need replacing, or if they have become too big or too small and are no longer providing the right treatment for you, please contact your lymphoedema service or relevant healthcare provider (GP, District Nurse).
